4 Ways to Stay Productive During the Holidays

It’s that time of the year when people are trying to finish up projects, thinking about buying presents, and dreaming of eating turkey all at the same time! As we approach the holiday season, it can be difficult to stay focused or set deadlines when you know vacation is right around the corner.

Still, the lead up to the holidays can be a really productive time in the office if you are prepared for the challenges of fluctuating schedules, gaps in availability, and inevitable distractions.

To help you make the most out of the holiday season, here are 4 tips on how to stay productive during one of the most fun and exciting times of the year:

1. Know when people are taking time off.

One easy first step you can take to ensure productivity during the holiday season is knowing when people you work with, especially those you need approval from to move forward, will be out of the office. Checking on people’s schedules a few weeks before major holidays can help you prepare for their absence so you aren’t left at a standstill while they are out of the office.

Extra tip: If your team does not have a shared work calendar, think about setting one up to keep your team in the loop about changing schedules.

 2. Separate work and play.

As Thanksgiving and Christmas draw closer, you will inevitably be thinking about things outside of work whether that be travel, your family, or the many presents you still need to buy. If you find yourself stressed out or distracted at work because of the mountain of things you have to do after work, take some time off to help you get ahead of those tasks. You may find yourself more productive and focused at work when you separate different tasks and responsibilities. 


3. Use the time to reflect.

During busy periods at work, we are under pressure to execute and may not always have time to reflect and strategize. If your workplace tends to slow down during the holidays, it is a great time to take a step back and evaluate your work. This could be anything from identifying trends, to assessing the progress of long-term goals, to measuring the impact of your work.

Extra tip: Try doing a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) Analysis.  

 
4. Start planning for the New Year.

Last but not least, you can use the holiday season to get ahead of the game! Use any extra hours you gain in the office to start setting goals for the New Year and start working towards those goals early. Being proactive will only help you when the New Year rolls around!

Contrary to what some may think, the end of the year can be a productive time at work. Anticipating the limitations of working during the holiday season can help you avoid barriers and blockers, keep your productivity up, and set you up for a great new year!
